Webinar for post-primary students interested in a career in healthcare

Thinking about a career in healthcare?

The Early Careers Event is an annual webinar organised by the University of Limerick Health Sciences Academy, Limerick and Clare Education & Training Board and Limerick Education Support Centre for Transition Year, Fifth & Sixth Year students called .

This free two day Zoom webinar is open to Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Students interested in information on careers and programmes of study in Health. Given the extremely busy nature of hospital settings, we understand that Secondary School Students cannot come to hospitals or other clinical settings for work experience or tours, and so we have designed this event to showcase healthcare as an option for further study and careers.

School leavers hear from current students studying at University of Limerick and Healthcare Professionals from UL Hospitals Group and Midwest Community Healthcare across various disciplines i.e. Paramedics, Physio, Nurse, Doctor and so much more.

Advisory Group

An advisory group consisting of the JHSA Team, Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board and Limerick Education Support Centre meet regularly to plan for this event. This includes Transition Year coordinators and Guidance Counsellors, and they have helped to design delivery of this webinar to maximise accessibility to the information and expertise that can be delivered to schools.

Schools have several options in promoting and facilitating this webinar.

Pre-Webinar

Guidance Counsellors or Transition Year Coordinators can refer students to the JHSA website to review previously recorded webinars and interviews with healthcare professionals and use the prompts in the resource to help prepare for the webinar.

Classes can be surveyed to determine expressions of interest with a view to attending the webinar or entire class/year-groups are welcome to attend also if this is practical for the school to facilitate on the day of the Webinar.

Classes can be surveyed to determine expressions of interest or the webinar can be broadcast via one computer and data projector to class groups or year groups for general information if this is possible in a General Assembly Area or Demonstration Room.

Alternatively, some schools bring a smaller group of interested students to a room with a computer and data projector to view the Webinar from there.

A Group may be able to go to the school computer lab and view from this facility.

Schools may allow students to bring in a device from home (subject to the school AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) and view the webinar on-line while supervised.

Some students and parents/guardians may wish to view this together at home to discuss the webinar content.

Parents can be informed about the webinar and are free to attend also. A follow-on webinar information session specifically for parents will be available at a future date in February or March 2024.
